HOW MANY SITES IS YOUR INTERNET RADIO STATION LISTED ON?

Just out of curiosity, have any of you that stream on line, looked up your station to see how many sites you are listed on?

Below is the latest results of my Google search for WFPN Rock 107.1 and WFPN AOR.

Two or Three

Good question MrBruce.

Some days I am only streaming directly from my website at kdxradio(dot)com, other days my three streams go public and are listed at the Shoutcast Director (shoutcast(dot)com).

When I run the Icecast Server I show up on the Icecast Directory.

To my knowledge I am not on any other directories.

Or, if any directories list my station they don't have my permission.

Say, this makes me think of somthing else....

As we hear there are hundreds-of-thousands of streaming radio stations but I wonder if many of them get double counted... for example with MrBruce on so many directories does each listing get counted as a different radio station?

My three streams are all the same station with the same programming, just different bandwidths and formats... do I get counted as three separate stations?

For Blue Bucket Radio

Barry, you have your "host" setting in the Icecast.xml config file set to "locahost" which is keeping it from appearing at the Icecast Directory.

Here's what I think you should do:

<!-- This is the hostname other people will use to connect to your server.         It affects mainly the urls generated by Icecast for playlists and yp         listings. You MUST configure it properly for YP listings to work!    -->    <hostname>thefreeproject.no-ip.org/</hostname>

That is the section of the config file with the recommended change.

The Icecast Directory is

What you have to do is go to

What you have to do is go to different sites that list radio stations, look for a link or button that says submit a station, fill in all the required information including a station logo and description of your station, where you are, what you play, then submit it.

Move onto another site and repeat last instructions.

Nobex will create free apps and publish them in the app store.

Besides the over seas sites, most I submitted my station's stream URL to which is:

http://s25.myradiostream.com:9672/

I use SHOUTCAST

Go to radiotuna.com do a submission

Go to Tunein.com do a submission

Go to radio.net do a submission

Keep checking sites for options to submit a station, then submit yours.

Eventually other sites automatically add your station.

There are links on line that explain how to add yourself to popular sites, some sites require a little work to get added, such as submitting a downloadable form and answering questions then emailing it to the email address provided, but it is worth it if they add you.

I am adding a link here, this is how I got started. The links on this page are the ones you want to click on and follow the instructions for being added to each site listed at the link below, please click on the link below and scroll down to read the blog:

https://radio.co/blog/internet-radio-directories-submit-promote/

Best of luck and pass it on!!

By the way I am also listed on delicast.com but there is no direct link I can post here.

I also still need to submit to a few other sites listed at the link above, I haven't submitted to them all as of yet. Working on it.

Bruce.

Myradiostream direct link

Myradiostream direct link does not allow you to be listed on a lof of site like Shoutcast or Radiotuna.  I use to be with listen2myradio my stream was not listed on shoutcast but I could be listed anywhere else.  I got a cheap shoutcat server 100 slots at 160kpbs now my stream is listed on the shoutcast site.

Carl brought up an

Carl brought up an interesting question, SoundExchange counts each stream as  different station. For example I have an mp3 and aac stream for my station, identical talk programming on each feed fed by the same AM radio, however if I played music I would have to pay royalties for both as if they were unrelated and carried different programming.

Learn Something Friday

Rained in by daylong showers the time is right for learning how to configure an Icecast Stream so it will show up on both Shoutcast and Icecast directories.

A very smart engineer told me it is possible for Icecast Servers to reach both directories. He was wearing a mask and rode toward the sunset.

Up until now I've had to run two servers to reach the two directories... a Shoutcast server and an Icecast server.

I will report anything that gets learned.

Carl Blare

Open to Question

In Post # 5 up above I may have given the wrong advice for setting the "Host" section of the Icecast Config File, except that "localhost" I know will not work outside of the LAN.

Read this instruction from the "Settings Guide" on the Icecast website:

Host -

This is the DNS name (or IP address) that will be used for the stream directory lookups or possibily the playlist generation if a Host header is not provided. This should be something that your listeners can use. Note: This should not be the URL of your stream's website or so, but the hostname for this Icecast server!

Darn. It doesn't explain how to determine what the host name is for the Icecast server. In fact, upon reflection, the instruction seems contradictory.

Can anyone explain it?

Carl Blare

When In Doubt

Looking at the set up for other Icecast Servers run by people who know more about how to do it is a good way to learn how to congigure the server.

After scouting around I landed on the server for wmuk.org.... U. of Michigan in Kalamazoo.

WMUK ICECAST SERVER

The way they handled the "host" setting is to utilize a sub-domain.

How does one establish a sub-domain?

That's our clue for today.

Carl Blare

I hate being correct all the time.

Marvelous Carl said: "After scouting around I landed on the server for wmuk.org.... U. of Michigan in Kalamazoo."

Resident Hobby Agent Wanna Bee said: "U of Michigan is in Ann Arbor. Western Michigan University is in Kalamazoo."

On Being Wrong

Mr. Wanna Bee spoke:  "I hate being right all the time."

Mr. Blare glibbed:  If Wanna Bee wasn't right we wouldn't know we were wrong.

WMUK is still in Kalamazoo, only the universities have been changed to protect my innocence.

Reply to Carl. The hostname

Reply to Carl. The hostname is your static IP (if you have one) or the name your DNS service uses (such as artisanradio.com) to resolve to your IP.

Recruiting DJboutit

DJbout it I think you should join the ALPB and come to our meetings two times a month on TeamSpeak.

Right now one of the things we are talking about is planning a mini-seminar (a tutorial done by ourselves) on how to stream a radio station.

Sounds like you could contribute a lot of experience to the project.

Right now we have Bob (MRAM), Johny (Rag FM), Troy (TheLegacy) and me (Carl), planning to give our own spin on streaming.

For the past 2 days I have been testing a lot of free streaming software.

Carl Blare

They ARE two stations

The thing is, they ARE two stations.  Each reaching a different audience.  In simply numbers, lets you say you have 50 listeners on one, and 50 on the other.  You have to pay for all 100 listeners. It's more a matter of audience that number of streams. Each stream will have it's own listeners creating a larger total than either one alone.  When you get right down to it they're counting listeners, not streams.   If you weren't getting listeners on each stream, why would you run two?  If it's for quality differentce or stream speeds, for example, it's for two specifically different groups of people, and your license has to cover them all, not just one.

TIB

But licensing?

If you set up your own server and stream by yourself, how do you handle the music licensing?

To be legal, near as I can tell, it's cheaper and easier to pay a streaming service that also includes the music licensing. Remember, streaming you have to pay ALL the groups -- ASCAP, BMI, ASCAP, SoundExchange, AND the new groups that have sprung up  over the last year or so. If you don't use a streaming provider it's up to you to provide all the song and artist data, listener counts, and send checks to all the groups.

It's pretty easy to set up a way to stream audio at basically no cost.  But to be legal for music is a whole 'nuther thing.

TIB

Many Details in the Devil

On Tim's first point - "If (one program is run on several streams) and it's for quality differentce or stream speeds, for example, it's for two specifically different groups of people, and your license has to cover them all, not just one."

That is understood, but it seems to me that if listeners of one program on three different kinds of streams were all totaled up you'd end up with the same number of listeners. But I suspect that the industry views multiple streams as different stations so they come out ahead dollar wise. It is just another way of gouging small stations.

On the other matter, running one's own streams, two of us intentionally use only license free material. The other stream seminar participants have arrangements with streaming services that collect royalties, and we'll have a chance to learn how each one works.

Carl Blare

Another Question For Tim

So there is only one stream which is subject to royalties, but it is listed on 10 different directories.

How many streams are there in the eyes of the money collectors?

Carl Blare

As far as having two streams

As far as having two streams say one in Mp3 and one in AAC+ you must report BOTH streams to the pro’s. If your going through a licensing service like StreamLicensing there is no issue with this besides setting up their reports monitoring for both streams.

You will need to give them your server password to monitor your station. So say I have 12 Mp3 listeners and 2 AAC+ listeners it counts on my ATH as 14 listeners.

On radio directories you simply post your playlist (.pls or .m3u link) to the directory and this counts as one stream. You simply pay a monthly rate based on your TLH (Total Listening Hours). It does get tricky this is why its best to pay for a licensing reporting company like StreamLicensing.

Ok here is an update on my

Ok here is an update on my end since I posted this information some time ago.

The best way to find the links is by using Google and searching various words pertaining to your station's name, for example for me it's WFPN or WFPN Radio or Rock 107.1 FM these are the monikers we use and some directory sites who have members who recommend you to their directory listings and they use a moniker they hear you use.

We do not list as 107.1 FM, that is simply a moniker, like Internet stations who use FM in their name to sound like a real radio station. So we identify as ROCK 107.1 FM and listeners identify us as such when they recommend us to an on-line directory.

So you Google those and you come up with different web listings for WFPN besides windows 10 errors LOL! Yes Googling WFPN brings up some stupid windows 10 memory leak issue.

But here is the listings I have found as of recently.

The first few links are my stream's links, then the directories I am listed in worldwide.

At the bottom of the list is WFPN radio applications links, also known as apps, which were done by Noblex. They are available in various app stores (such as Itunes) for free.

The only issue with Noblex is if your listenership is below 100 downloads and listeners, they want $5.99 a month to keep your APP alive and updated. We Fell short of the 100 mark and I have not decided to pay a monthly fee to keep the APP updated to newer release versions. So keep that in mind if you deal with Noblex to create and publish your stream APP. You have to show you have 100 listeners using their APP to qualify for free support and free updates.
