SStran, makers of the AMT3000 and AMT5000 AM transmitter kits, has announced they are not accepting new orders and are not able to fill their backlog of orders.
Druid Hills Radio AM-1710- Dade City, FL. Unlicensed operation authorized by the Part 15 Department of the FCC and our Resident Hobby Agent.
i was wondering about that for awile now i was looking at getting a SStran AMT3000 oh well
It comes as a shock and very saddening news to hear that the glorious days of the SSTran excellent AM transmitter kits has unceremoniously concluded.
Questions remain about the status of PhilB, inventor and proprietor of SSTran. No one so far has any information about his situation.
We will hope that PhilB came into billions of dollars and moved to an island kingdom where the FCC don't shine.
Our life in part 15 will never be the same.
This happened with North Country Radio a few years ago they had a nice AM transmitter with a digital fequency country fully built kit for a likr $200 to $250 and they all of a sudden removed it from their site. I was really close to getting one I read 2 reviews that said it was a decent trasnmitter.
The saying goes, nothing lasts forever.
The owner(s) retire, get older or become ill, or maybe business isn't good enough to continue. Whatever. Sad sometimes but thats the way it goes. The transmitter business isn't like a product that is continually needed and with a good quality product you buy one and that lasts indefinately so when everyone that wants one has one not to many are sold anymore.
This can happen with all the transmitter makers like Procaster, Rangmaster, Decade, Brodcastvision etc.
I ordered an AMT3000 two weeks ago and today I checked to see why it had not arrived. No more AMTs. Thinking a part went obsolete I checked at Digikey and all four ICs are active and in stock. If a part package type had gone obsolete a new PCB could be designed or a small adapter PCB made.
My plan was to use the AMT3000 for its frequency agility and SSM2166P audio compression. The RF output stage was to be replaced with something more efficient.
So, needing something to replace the temporary junk transmitter, I ordered a Talking House transmitter.
Does the Talking House have effective compression?
My interests are antennas, transmitters, studio equipment, and setting up a useful Part 15 AM radio station.
The Talking House has no on board compression like the Procaster and SStran does.
Sad news but I think most of us saw it coming. I've never really put my 5000 into production opting instead to use my Procaster, but this has rekindled my interest in it.

As is often said on American Pickers, "The time to buy something is when you see it."
Apparently SStran has been struggling for a year, according to a thread on an Antique Radios forum.
Not to mention the harrassment he received by so-called professional radio broadcast engineers. I hope they are happy.
Well, I beieve that those guys are legends only in their own minds.
Although I'm sure that it didn't help what was probably a marginal business at best anyway to have a few going around slagging that business at every chance they got, with little basis in fact.
There is a gentleman named Liam located in St. Louis that has re-sold SSTran transmitters since 1990.
I have e-mailed him to discover whether he has any remaining stock, which could prove our last chance to find one of these great transmitters.
His reply will be shared.
Do you mean Patrick Ryan? His email is email@example.com.
His website states he is not accepting new orders until all current orders are complete, but hopefully he does have ome inventory. I bought my 5000 from him beause he had stock and SSTRAN did not.
Thanks Jim for linking to Patrick Ryan.
I'm still hoping he'll answer my e-mail sent earlier today.
He offers a few other part 15 transmitters including a tube model.
Don't let Snobby Dude find this out or he'll tear that down too!!
Maybe this site should have an Elite section so we can talk about assembled transmitters where pretend Radio Police can't troll and start a mess for us "Handicapped people" who can't see or may have other disabilities stopping them from making their own transmitter. Maybe a discrimination lawsuit from the National Federation of the Blind is in order for Mr. Snobby. Yes I'll be sending some E-Mails to some of my Blind Radio friends who just Love Lawsuits.
As for more information to free up the false info on this subject!!
A well respected Radio Engineer for NRR has this to say as he has done his homework and research as to a statement that was false earlier and wants to clarify it. Here is the link:

More Power for Hobby Broadcasters
Please name this well respected "Radio Engineer?"
Geeze legacy what a way to derail yet another thread with nonsense, everyone knows about Pat Ryan and his operation has been discussed in depth on nearly every part 15 board ever.
As for Druid Hills/WDCX's Question, its Station8 aka "Operator".
Its not nonsense because some Electronics parts companies were passing miss information saying the part was Discontinued When it actually was Replaced with a chip that is Lead FREE.
Yes they Discontunued the S series but you'll hear more from this Respected Radio Engineer. Some of us at NRR do actual reasearch before passing Information because we Ourselves learned this valuable lesson.
You can actually put a good company out of business passing false information. We at NRR believe in keeping this hobby alive and this means trying to find out why a company is not acception orders but at the same time not just guess.
I was referring to the first half of your previous comment about hiding Pat.
I was previously unaware of the events concerning the second half.
IF there is something you don't understand about the comment ASK on OUR SITE!!
Our Engineer spokesmen will get back with you but be specific in what your asking.
TheLegacy has creative ideas sometimes but...
TheLegacy said: "IF there is something you don't understand about the comment ASK on OUR SITE!!"
I'm out of line saying this because it is really up to the moderators but I wouldn't think that it would be out of line to answer ON THIS THREAD when responding to comments made ON THIS THREAD.
I think part of the confusion is that you (TheLegacy) have been talking about the people at hobbybroadcaster website and some members on this website think you're talking about Patrick Ryan who sells AMT3000 and AMT5000 transmitters.
The discoveries about the integrated circuit chip are interesting, although I don't find the place where it was originally brought up on this thread... I think you guys have been responding to something someone else said on a different website?
Nobody here has said there was a "discontinued chip" thus explaining why SSTran is closing down. Your highly regarded Engineer is barking another tree.
Color me confused because I guess I have no idea what or who Legacy is talking about. I assumed he was responding to your comment Carl about Pat Ryan.
From what I gathered he had been talking about Pat Ryan's transmitters and the need to keep quiet about it so the "Radio Police" don't find out. (And that it was harrassing the blind or something) Then came the 2nd half which I knew nothing about so I had no comment for.

The ALPB holds seminars to aid members to improve their skills, and what I see here is a chance to plan a seminar on thread communication to get ideas across with clarity without ballistics.
For now this is a thread about the closing of SSTran which has nothing to do with a discontinued chip.
SStran is closing because of a DISCONTINUED CHIP?
Hi All: let's see if I can help you guys out.
1) let Phil b.From sstran get on his site to tell people what
Is really going on before guessing and passing information out!!!!!!!
Note: ( which I notice some of you guys did!!!!)
2) I think a lot of you guys are getting confused what was said
About the ssm2166 ic chip on the other site.
3) you need to go back and read it if you don't understand
Reread it or get someone to explain for you better.
4)the answer was right in front of you and you boch it
About the ssm2166.
5) informing you about the chip was to help you out
NOT start a mass confusion.
Just so you know I worked in electronic industries field of 14 + years
And I did wave soldering, cutting PCB boards, stuff boards,
Mechanical assemble,shipping,working with engineers,v.p and
President of the company, worked in repair, worked in
Parts department, ordering dept,I also know how toLook for obsolete componets as well.
I also did machinery work as well.
So you guys can't tell me I don't know what Im doing.
Happy trails I hope this helps
Actually, there was no confusion until information from other sites was introduced into the thread.
What it boils down to is that SSTran is no more, we don't know why and likely won't know why unless they decide to enlighten us on their web site.
A discussion of potential alternative kits (if any) would probably be useful at this point, but maybe in a separate thread.
Howdy all: Where you said sstran is no more.
How do you know he is NO more, do you know something that the
Rest of use don't know?.
I do NOT think this comment should be made without actual proof
Or phil b told you to pass the message out.
Note: Do to it will damage his company if you guys are wrong!.
Let Phil B. Come out and say what's going on with his company
I rather hear it from the person own words.
There could be so many reasons why we haven't heard from
Phil be let's give him some time.
Examples sick, busy, holidays, part supply problems, medical god forbid,
Help problems, etc.
There so many things I could mention but I won't.
Phil B. Of sstran please let us know what's going on!.
This is not to bust on anyone, just to find out what is the
Delay to no response and the outcome of sstran business.
Sorry Folks but this thread is going nowhere in terms of factual information beyond what is on the SSTRAN site. As Station8 remarked, such speculation can harm SSTRAN. Let's suspend the speculation until PhilB speaks to the questions.
